Land carved out by the God with green fingers

Situated on the tropical Malabar Coast and sandwiched between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats , Kerala is ‘one of the ten paradises of the world’ - we are not saying that, National Geographic Traveler magazine is!

Kerala with its vast stretches of green paddy fields, sprawling rubber and tea plantations, romantic backwaters, lush hill stations, and sandy beaches is a traveller’s delight! Truly God’s Own Country with the best vegetarian cuisine on EARTH!

The name ‘Kerala’ means ‘land of coconuts’ – you cannot have missed the coconut palms that dot the landscape in abundance. And while you are here why not nurture your mental, spiritual and physical well being with an Ayurvedic massage – holistic treatment at its best.

Kerala stands apart from other states of India, thanks to human development indices like long life expectancy; low infant mortality; and the high literacy rate amongst men and women – actually, the women outnumber the men here!

Thiruvananthapuram, City of the Gods

Anglicised to Trivandrum, this is the capital city of Kerala – the abode of Lord Anantha, the mythical snake God on whom Lord Vishnu reclines. The city derives its name from the reigning deity, Lord Vishnu, enshrined in the imposing and impressive Sri Padmanabhaswamy temple, which dates back to the 16th century.

Trivandrum is the cultural capital of Kerala. The city plays host to numerous cultural events throughout the year with the annual Soorya Festival being the most prominent. This 75 day festival is considered the longest running festival in Asia showcasing India’s dance, music, literature, films, theatre and folk arts. The International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), one of the foremost film festivals in India, is another prestigious event in the city’s calendar. This yearly affair is a treat for cinema aficionados with the city’s theatres screening films from around the globe. Other noteworthy mentions include the weeklong Onam (Kerala’s principal harvest festival) festivities and the annual Flower and Aquarium Show.

As for places of interest – there are some spectacular beaches (like the very popular Kovalam) in and around Trivandrum. The Trivandrum Museum and Zoo is one of the oldest of its kind in India. It also boasts of chain stores like Big Bazar, Spencer's etc. The latest entry into the retail shopping scenario is Reliance who's opening their store in Trivandrum shortly. Since the establishment of Technopark in 1995, Trivandrum has grown in to a competitive IT centre.
